Launch Out
What does it look like to stop playing it safe and truly launch out in faith? At the heart of this message is the familiar but deeply challenging story from Luke 5, where Jesus tells a group of exhausted, empty-handed fishermen to push out into deep water and let down their nets one more time. These men had worked through the night and come up with nothing. Their nets were freshly washed. Every practical instinct told them the effort was pointless. And yet, the word came anyway: launch out into the deep. What follows is one of the most staggering moments of provision in all of Scripture. Historical and economic research suggests that the two boatloads of fish brought in that day represented somewhere between twelve and thirty-five years of wages for each of the men involved. In one moment of obedience, God provided for everything they would need to walk away from their fishing business and give themselves fully to the work of the kingdom. The lesson is unmistakable. God does not ask us to launch out so that we will suffer loss. He asks us to launch out so that we can receive what we never could have caught staying close to the shore. The question this message presses us to answer honestly is this: where have we been washing our nets instead of casting them? Where have we let weariness, disappointment, or comfort keep us from the deep water where the real haul is waiting?
